IPAN PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION TRAINING
Due to the diversity of the functions of a Public Analyst, the training requirement is tailored to broaden the knowledge of trainees in the various fields of Chemistry, Pharmacy, Microbiology, Food Science, Environmental Sciences, etc; and the practical aspects of analysis of consumables.
There are three levels of professional training - Foundation, Professional I and Professional II leading to qualifying examinations. Candidates are categorised based on their qualification(s) and years of on the bench experiences and must pass one level before proceeding to the next.

CRITERIA FOR PLACEMENT ON PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION LEVELS
The following approved criteria are used for placing Membership Applicants into the Institute's three levels of training:

STAGE 1 FOUNDATION LEVEL
- An Applicant with less than five (5) years of cognate post-qualification(analytical lab analyis) experience.

STAGE 2 PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION I (P.E. I)
- An Applicant with five (5) to below ten (10) years of cognate post qualification(...........) experiences.
- An Applicant with a M.Sc. degree.

STAGE 3 PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION II (P.E. II)
- Applicants with not less than ten (10) years of cognate post qualification (.............)experiences in an analytical laboratory (with strict emphasis on analytical laboratory).

PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION TRAINING COURSES

STAGE 1: FOUNDATION LEVEL

Paper I Fundamentals of Environmental Science
Paper II Fundamentals of Pharmacy and Analysis of Cosmetics
Paper III Fundamentals of Chemistry
Paper IV Fundamentals of Microbiology and Food Science & Technology

The Foundation Level involves basic training in the disciplines of Science relevant to the practice of a Public Analyst, as specified in the Foundation syllabus.

STAGE 2: PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION I (P.E. I)

Paper I Classical and Separation Methods of Analysis
Paper II Spectroscopic and Miscellaneous Methods of Analysis
Paper III Data management and Quality Assurance
Paper IV Microbiology

P.E. I involves training in the theory, principles and applications of analytical techniques applicable to laboratory analysis as specified in P.E. I syllabus.

STAGE 3: PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION II (P.E. II)

Paper I Fundamentals of Law and Management
Paper II Practical Analysis of Food OR Drugs/Cosmetics (Major)
Paper III Practical Analysis of Food OR Drugs/Cosmetics OR Water/Environment (Minor)
Paper IV Writing of Report of Analysis
Paper V Tutelage Report (9 months Laboratory mentoring under an approved Mentor)

Professional Examination II is the final stage of the Institute's training programme and it is aimed at testing a candidate's ability to analyse real samples for specific objectives; write meaningful reports and give professional advice based on the result of laboratory analysis carried out.
Candidates who successfully complete these professional trainings and examinations are admitted into membership of the Institute during an induction ceremony and are registered and licensed to practice as Public Analysts in Nigeria.
